It's A WRAP

Dear Designer

Please don't look at me blankly next time time I ask you to contribute to the site waste management plan when  you are developing your design.

WRAP  (Waste and Resources Action Programme) has developed tools and resources to aid designers in achieving waste reduction, recovery and re-use targets.

So you don't need to just leave it to the contractor and rely on him.

WRAP works in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland to prevent waste, promote recycling and  develop markets for valuable products.

Asbestos Surveys - Keep Up! They're Not Called Type 1, 2 or 3 Anymore

So you have just got to grips with the different types of asbestos surveys that have to be carried out?
Type 1, Type 2 or Type 3?

Or you think you have?

Well, sorry but you haven't.

But, it's not all wasted energy.

Apparently, as having the three different types of surveys, and named accordingly Type 1, 2  and 3, was confusing (and it was),  there have been some changes.

 HSE Guidance Note HSG 264 has now been published and  there are now only two different types of survey:

In effect Type 1 and Type 2 survey have been combined into a Management Asbestos Survey.

The aim of a management asbestos survey is to locate and identify the presence of asbestos within the fabric of a building.  The asbestos can then be managed and when builders are carrying out maintenance works they can be told about it so they don't go and drill into it.

Type 3 surveys are now referred to as a Demolition or Refurbishment Asbestos Survey.

A Demolition or Refurbishment Asbestos Survey will be completed when the building (or part of a building) is to be demolished or refurbished.

Asbestos-Having An Asbestos Survey Is Not As Good As It Gets

1. Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006 Reg 4 (8)(9)(10)

You may think that once you have had an asbestos survey of your premises you  have discharged your duties.

You haven't.

This is only the beginning.

After having a survey carried out you need to develop and put in place a management plan for non-domestic premises as required by the regulations.

The asbestos management plan for the non-domestic premises should include for:

(a) Information about the risks associated with asbestos containing materials (ACMs) and the priorities for action;

(b) Identification of the ACMs, their location and condition (an asbestos register)

(c) How damaged ACMs or ACMs in poor condition will be repaired, encapsulated or removed as required;

(d) How the condition of remaining ACMs will be monitored;

(e) How information about ACMs will be provided to those persons liable to disturb them;

(f) How work involving disturbance of ACMs will be managed;

(g) Who will be responsible for managing the plan;

(h) The means by which the plan will be implemented;

(i) When and how the plan will be reviewed;
